....When I heard the terms “war against cancer,” or "battling cancer" I indeed found these analogies fitting to the new support group sisters I was getting to know: some had just been drafted, some were in the boot camp phase, some had been to battle, some were in the reserves, and others were dreadfully being re-enlisted. Any way you looked at it--our chests were the battlefield. We had the war pains,war stories, and battle scars to prove it ---hidden away under our shields of clothing. We'd proudly displayed our pink medals of honor. We’d use words to describe what we were going (or went) through, and our imagination of what each personal battlefield might look like. Occasionally, some of the ladies would sneak into the ladies room at the coffee bistro where our meetings were held to show new recruits what the war zones really looked like.
